When love kills love: 40,000 people have taken their lives in the past decade in India
Nearly all cultures associate love with pain and sacrifi ce. NCRB data on accidental deaths and suicides shows that love affairs act as the trigger for thousands of suicides in India. In the past decade (2005-14), love affairs have resulted in about 40,000 people taking their own lives.

West Bengal alone witnessed over 7,000 such deaths. Tamil Nadu and Assam, too, have a relatively high incidence of suicides caused by love affairs. Being about 54% of the total victims, it seems that men are slightly more susceptible to suicides caused by love than women.
