An azure sea in the background, his shirt sleeves fluttering in the wind, and the crowd chanting ‘Bula, Bula’, India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar tapped his final putt home to win the Fiji International on Sunday. The 30-year-old became only the sixth Indian golfer to lift a title on the European Tour, earning a cheque of €132,231 (over Rs 1 cr) for his effort. These are some of the things he did that will help you in your career, or the golf course. Relocation Bhullar has been one of India’s top golfers for over a decade. But last year, he realised he had to up the ante and shifted to California to train under cop turned golf guru Noah Montgomery. “The primary objective of shifting to the US is to up my game and move to the next level,” he said in an interview. “Four eyes are always better than two.”
The short game
Bhullar’s chip shot in windy conditions paved the way for his win in Fiji. It is one of the areas he has worked on. “I have always been a solid ball striker,” he said in an interview. “My short game is where I need to convert the game to wins. So I worked on those. I did see a lot of good players —Jordan Speith, Jason Day, Adam Scott. I read books by or on Ben Hogan, Sam Snead — to understand what was holding me back.”

The drive Though a natural striker with a big swing, Bhullar needed to hit farther on a consistent basis. After working on the shot with his ward, his coach Montgomery said, “He is able to hit 300-plus yards regularly in comparison to 280 yards he was driving earlier. His set-up is much better now and he can go through the ball more aggressively.”
