When Rohit Yadav was just 21, his life came to a grinding halt. His father, once full of life, was diagnosed with Chronic Liver Disease. "He couldn’t even sit up on his own," Rohit remembers. Every day brought new pain and helplessness. His mother quietly fell apart behind closed doors, crying at night and praying beside her husband’s bed: “Bhagwaan, kuch toh karo.” And through it all, Rohit would sit next to her, saying, “Sab theek hoga.”

But nothing got better. In an interview with the Humans of Bombay, he shared that in 2011, doctors told the family the only chance left was a liver transplant. It felt like a lifeline—but his father flatly refused to take that step if it meant putting any of his children at risk. Rohit’s older brother had just gotten married. His sister’s wedding was still ahead. That left only Rohit.

“Everyone told me not to do it,” he says. “But I knew I had to.” He underwent a barrage of tests to see if he was a match. As the surgery approached, emotions ran high. “The night before, my father finally hugged me tight. No words. Just tears,” Rohit recalls.

The surgery lasted nearly 10 hours. Rohit doesn’t remember much—just the excruciating pain afterwards. Days later, when he finally saw his father again, he heard words that still echo in his mind: “I’m proud of you.”

Rohit's father's promise

But then came a promise that hit even harder: “Main daaru ko haath nahi lagaunga. Apna khayal rakhunga.” Rohit knew, in that moment, his father meant it.

Recovery wasn’t easy. Rohit was on strict bed rest for three months. His father, nearly a year. But together, they clawed their way back to health. It’s been over 17 years since then. Today, Rohit is 38, his father is 68—and both are fit, healthy, and thriving. Rohit is now a Licensed-Certified Nutrition Coach. “People still come up to me and say, ‘Beta, tumne bohot bada kaam kiya hai.’ And I always tell them—I’d do it again, a hundred times over. Because for Maa-Papa… anything.”

Internet reacts

One user called it a true blessing and said they would do anything for their parents. Another shared how deeply inspiring the story was, while someone else expressed admiration, saying the person never fails to motivate others. A comment mentioned that the story moved them to tears. And one person pointed out how emotional the line about doing anything for one’s father really was.
