It was speculated, but it seems that the sale of Chintan Upadhyay’s painting at a recent auction has exceeded expectations. The controversial artist’s work at the Summer Online auction held by Saffronart, saw an unusually high interest. The painting fetched Rs 9.7 lakh, almost double of the estimate of Rs 3.9 lakh-5.20 lakh. Apparently, there were quite a few bids for the 2003 untitled oil painting. However, one bidder from India was particularly persistent and made the highest of fer. Upadhyay was arrested in January as a key suspect in the murders of his estranged wife Hema Upadhyay and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani. But despite the upheaval in his personal life, interest in the artist’s work seems to be flourishing.
