It is ironical that Ajit Wadekar, who led India to its first Test series win overseas, passed away at a time when the current side is struggling in England.

This picture (below) shows Wadekar and a young Sunil Gavaskar basking in the adulation of fans at Santa Cruz Airport in Mumbai, 1971, after returning from the victorious tour of the West Indies, India’s first ever series win abroad.

Gavaskar, the find of the series, holds aloft a trophy presented to him by the Trinidad Cricket Council for his batting feats. Wadekar seems content to let his protégé enjoy the spotlight, perhaps aware that his own place in the sun will never be eclipsed.

Pyeongchang might have been Kim’s first chance at Winter Olympics, but the teenager’s performance was far from that of a debutante. Qualifying for the 2014 Sochi Games at the age of 13 solidified her as one of America’s best snowboarders, but she was more than two years short of the Olympics’ minimum age requirement.
