Microsoft Unblocking AI to Help the Differently-abled
As over one billion people — roughly 15% of the world's population — grapple with some form of disability, Microsoft has begun unblocking the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve assistive technologies in several ways, its India president Anant Maheshwari said. Maheshwari said nearly 200 million people experience significant difficulties in functioning globally. For example, leveraging AI capabilities in computer vision for the blind and the low-vision community, the Microsoft app uses optical character recognition (OCR) to read text, scans barcodes and recognises faces, emotions and objects to describe the world.

Cancer Drug may Help Treat HPV Infections
Scientists — including one of Indian origin — have identified cancer drugs that may be repurposed to treat infections caused by human papillomaviruses. HPV infections caused an estimated 2,66,000 deaths from cervical cancer worldwide in 2012, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Highly efficacious vaccines against HPV infection exist — including the recently approved Gardasil 9, which immunises against nine genotypes of HPV known to cause cervical, vulvar, vaginal and anal cancers, and genital warts. However, the vaccine needs to be given before a person becomes sexually active, since it has no therapeutic efficacy against existing HPV infections.

Lying to Doctors is more Common than You Think
If you tend to stretch the truth while answering your doctor on questions related to exercise or diet, you have company. "Most people want their doctor to think highly of them," said the study's senior author Angela Fagerlin from University of Utah in the US. "They're worried about being pigeonholed as someone who doesn't make good decisions," she added. Insights into the doctor-patient relationship came from an online survey.
