What makes Vidit Gujrathi a chess champion

Since his nail-biting draw against Magnus Carlsen last month at the Isle of Man Chess Open, 22-year-old Vidit Gujrathi has been on a roll.

The shy youngster, who is currently ranked at number three in India, was awarded the 'Best sportsman for 2017' at the Bombay Gymkhana on Monday, where talk about his battle for the title with the Norwegian champ was unending.

ETPanache caught up with Gujrathi for some more details. "I was very chilled out through the game but at the same time I was thrilled to get the chance to play against Magnus. He was unpredictable and made many freestyle moves during the game," he said.



After the game, Gujrathi said he and Carlsen spoke at length, discussing the match and their moves. "We exchanged many ideas and thoughts. While our thought process was more or less the same, we did disagree on some points. But overall, it was a healthy and enlightening post-mortem."
