Allahbadia’s remarks during the show led to nationwide outrage, multiple FIRs, and scrutiny from legal authorities, including the Supreme Court of India.

During the episode, Allahbadia asked a contestant a shocking question about parents. The comment left Raina, known for his dark humor, visibly stunned as he responded, “Kya ho gaya hai Ranveer bhai ko? [What has happened to Ranveer?]”

The clip quickly went viral, drawing heavy criticism. Social media erupted with demands to ban the show, and FIRs were filed against Allahbadia, host Samay Raina, and other guest judges, including Ashish Chanchlani, comedian Jaspreet Singh, and content creator Apoorva Mukhija.

What Happened After the Joke?

While public outrage intensified, a Mumbai-based audience member, Mohit Khubani, shared his perspective, claiming Allahbadia had immediately apologized after making the joke. “The kid (contestant) came, Ranveer made the joke. Immediately after, he apologized three to four times, asking, ‘Hope you didn’t feel bad’,” Khubani said in a now-viral Instagram video. He further revealed that Samay Raina also checked on the contestant’s comfort, and the contestant assured them he was okay.


Khubani emphasized that an apology does not erase the incident but insisted that Allahbadia made a genuine effort to ensure the contestant was not uncomfortable. He also mentioned that the contestant ended up winning the competition that day, with Allahbadia later hugging him and once again apologizing. “Ranveer hugged him and asked again, ‘You okay? Sorry if that joke upset you’. Raina also reassured the contestant, adding, ‘You killed it, bhai. Crazy performance’.”

Legal Actions Against Ranveer Allahbadia

The controversy escalated as multiple FIRs were lodged across different states, including Maharashtra, Jaipur, and Guwahati. Authorities alleged that Allahbadia had been “unreachable” for questioning, prompting the Maharashtra Cyber Cell to summon him on February 24. The National Commission for Women (NCW) also summoned the show’s creators, but they failed to appear, citing safety concerns and prior commitments.

As criticism mounted, Samay Raina deleted all episodes of India’s Got Latent from his YouTube channel. Addressing the issue, Raina said, “Everything that is happening has been too much for me to handle. I have removed all India’s Got Latent videos from my channel. My only objective was to make people laugh and have a good time. I will fully cooperate with all agencies to ensure their inquiries are concluded fairly. Thank you.”

Supreme Court Weighs In

In response to the multiple FIRs, Allahbadia approached the Supreme Court, seeking protection from arrest and the consolidation of all cases against him. His lawyer, Abhinav Chandrachud, argued that Allahbadia had been receiving death threats due to the controversy.

The Supreme Court, however, strongly condemned the language used in the show. A bench led by Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh remarked, “We would like to know that in this country if this is not obscenity, then what is?” The court further stated, “Do you subscribe to the language that he has used? What is the parameter of obscenity? There is a height of irresponsibility. They believe that since they’ve become popular, they can say anything. There’s dirt in his mind. Why should the court favor such a person?”

Despite its criticism, the court granted interim protection from arrest to Allahbadia, allowing him to avoid immediate detention while the legal proceedings continue.

The incident has sparked a nationwide debate on the boundaries of humor, content regulation, and online accountability. While some argue that comedy should have creative freedom, others believe that certain lines should not be crossed, especially in a public setting.

A former contestant of India’s Got Latent commented on social media, stating, “I had a similar experience… I was a performer and got badly trolled, but man, man, man… Be it Samay, Balraj, Rahul, Kenny, Hozay, everyone was sorry and made sure I was comfortable.” Another user wrote, “Exactly! If Samay asked him multiple times if he was comfortable with it before airing that part, then why is this controversy even happening?”
