Share gift registry – a common phenomenon in the West — with friends and guests.

Wall clocks, lamps, a bunch of crockery and flower bouquets pretty much sum up typical wedding gifts that couples get stuck with. Perhaps that’s why, youngsters tying the knot are increasingly opting for a gift registry – a wishlist of gifts they curate and share with friends and guests invited for the celebrations.

A common phenomenon in the West, wedding gift registries in India have only just started taking off. Typically, these websites tie up with big ticket marketplaces like Amazon, Flipkart, Homecentre, FabIndia and several other popular gifting stores. The bride and groom select any number of products or gift cards from these websites and create a wishlist to share with the guests, who can then purchase them. “Today’s generation wants things their way, and guests don’t have to break their heads over guessing what gift to buy. So, it’s a win -win situation. Our aim is to give couples a waste-free wedding,” said Kanika Subbiah, co-founder of Wedding Wishlist, a Chennai-based, dedicated wedding registry site.

Once the registry is ready, the website creates an URL which can be shared with the guests via social media, email, messages. The gifts can be paid for by the guests via UPI, Paytm or credit/debit cards. The company also packages and delivers gifts to the couples post their wedding.

Wishtry, another online gift registry based in Mumbai, wedding registries have seen a sharp rise especially from Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai over the last 1.5 years. The company has also diversified into gift registries for baby showers, bachelor/bachelorette parties, birthdays, graduation parties etc.

Another popular option that these websites provide is a cash fund, where, instead of gifts, couples ask for cash, which they can either spend on their honeymoon or buy things on their own. New Delhi-based gifting brand IkkaDukka.com has an online registry which also has the option to share ‘Thank You’ notes with guests once they purchase the gifts. Online furniture marketplace Pepperfry also recently announced a registry option on their website, albeit not limited to weddings.

The Google CEO’s usually minimalistic style took a sharp climb upward with his choice of sherwani. Complementing his salt and pepper hair, Pichai could have given Bollywood stars a run for their money with his silver embossed outfit. Our only grouse — his lacklustre schoolboy style shoes.

Tanvi and Harsh from Bengaluru, who got married in January this year, say that couples usually don’t talk about gifts they want. “I was initially hesitant about this idea, but it turned out great as we have absolutely no gifts to recycle from the wedding. I’m glad we were vocal about the things we wanted. Instead of products though, we added gift cards from all our favorite brands in the registry,” Tanvi said.

However, there are cultural barriers to such trends. “It’s a fairly new concept in India. People are more conservative and asking for gifts or cash may be viewed as “aggressive” by families,” Sajan Abraham, founder of Zibonga, a Chennai based gift registry says. Aditi Mehta, president and co- founder of Wishtry agrees, adding that therefore many people tend to share their registry only with friends or cousins, and not the entire guest list. “It will take some time, but the trend is surely catching on,” she said.
