With all reservoirs in the state filled to the brim and the monsoon showing no signs of abating, waterfalls which had lost their sheen over years of drought have sprung back to life. This has prompted a new weekend sightseeing opportunity. ET lists some of these sights-to-behold nearer Bengaluru.
Gaganachukki, Bharachukki Falls Distance from Bengaluru: 140 km Location: Gaganachukki is in Mandya district; Bharachukki, a couple of kilometres away, falls in Chamarajanagar district.
How to reach: National Highway 209 via Kanakapura, Malavalli and Panditahalli. About three hours by road Gaganachukki and Bharachukki,on the Cauvery river, are among the most popular waterfalls closer to Bengaluru this season. The river splits into two, falls into a valley at two separate places: Gaganachukki is narrower and fierce while Bharachukki is wider and serene. One can view Gaganachukki only from a specially-erected viewpoint. Bharachukki is more popular amongst tourists as it is more accessible. It is not wise right now to venture down the railings created to reach the bottom of the falls.
Shimsha Falls Distance: Approximately 130 km Location: Shimsha village, Mandya district

How to reach: Take Kanakapura road. Continue and take a diversion near Malavalli and drive for about 10 km. Driving time of over two hours Located at a distance of about 100 km from Bengaluru is the lesser-known Shimsha Falls. A tributary of Cauvery, Shimsha flows over 200 km from Devarayanadurga before it forms a cascading waterfall at Shimsha village near Halaguru on its course to meet the Cauvery. These falls power the turbines that drive Asia’s first hydroelectric power station. While visitors are allowed to walk down on the narrow path leading to the foothills, the rocks are slippery. The view is best enjoyed from a distance. The trip can be combined with Gaganachukki-Bharachukki, which are 50 km further.

Chunchanakatte Falls Distance: Approximately 200 km Location: Chunchanakatte, KR Nagar in Mysuru district How to reach: Take the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway to Mysuru. Proceed on the Mysuru-Hassan highway and take a diversion at KR Nagar town. The waterfall is located at a distance of about 15 km from K R Nagar.
Chunchanakatte Falls is a hidden gem in Mysuru district. Water here — the falls is 60-ft high and 300-400-ft wide — does not drop from a great height when compared to Gaganachukki, Bharachukki and Shimsha. Nevertheless, the pristine water of the Cauvery flowing with great force is a visual treat. This falls has come back to life after eight years. Along the way, one cannot miss the sprawling paddy fields of the rice bowl of Karnataka.
Sangama - Gosai Ghat Distance: 115 km Location: Srirangapatna, Mandya district How to reach: Take the road from Bengaluru to Mysuru. At Srirangapatna town, take left towards Sangama and Gosai Ghat
This may be no waterfall but the Sangama-Gosai Ghat stretch at Ganjam offers a beautiful view of the Cauvery during the monsoon. Sangama, as the name suggests, is the confluence of two branches of the Cauvery. The westward-flowing branch meets the eastward-flowing one. The hill in the backdrop adds to the view. Sangama, considered a holy place, is largely crowded but the nearby Gosai Ghat remains quiet. The rows of trees along the ghat offer a perfect backdrop.
Chunchi Falls Distance: 100 km Location: Chunchi, Kanakapura How to reach: Travel on KanakapuraSangama road and take a left near Alahalli. A 15-km drive from the point takes one to Chunchi Falls.
Away from the hustle-bustle of Bengaluru is Chunchi Falls, where the Arkavathi, another tributary of the Cauvery, gushes at full speed. The road to this lesser known waterfall — named after a tribal hamlet nearby — is as beautiful as the destination. The lush green deciduous forest along the way offers a spectacular view. The experience can be adventurous as one has to trek down a rocky and muddy hill to reach the viewing point. Close to the falls is another Sangama where Arkavathi joins the Cauvery.
Muthyala Maduvu Falls Distance: 50 km Location: Anekal How to reach: Take the road to Electronic City and continue travelling on the Anekal-Thally road. Halfway, take a right to reach Muthyala Maduvu. Since the main road does not have a visible sign board, one can easily miss the turn.
This destination, also known as Pearl Valley, is the closest from Bengaluru. Located at a distance of about 50 km and bordering Tamil Nadu, it makes for a halfday picnic. Muthyala Maduvu is a 100-ft high fall amid a green valley in Anekal. Unlike the previous ones, this requires one to take a not-so-easy trek to witness. A descent to the valley, paved with 300 steps, helps one to get the best view. The stream is full of slippery rocks. In the summer, water is down to a trickle.
Balamuri Falls, Srirangapatna Distance: About 140 km from Bengaluru Location: Srirangapatna, Mandya district How to reach: From Srirangapatna, it is a 16-km drive to the falls The man-made barrages built across the Cauvery between Mysuru and Srirangapatna have become tourists spots in their own right. The two barrages, at Balmuri and Edmuri, are surrounded by lush green sugarcane fields, which have, over the years, acted as the backdrop for many a dance sequence in Kannada films. There are, however, restrictions on swimming or playing in the streams, which have seen many drown.
