Madhavan was born on June 1, 1970, in Jamshedpur, Bihar (present-day Jharkhand), India, into a Tamil Brahmin family. His father, Ranganathan, worked as a management executive at Tata Steel, while his mother, Saroja, held a managerial position at the Bank of India. Madhavan has a younger sister, Devika, who is a software engineer. Raised in Jharkhand, he grew up speaking Tamil at home. Beyond his acting career, Madhavan is known for his philanthropic work, especially in areas like environmental awareness, healthcare, and education.

Madhavan was last seen in the horror movie ‘Shaitaan’, along with Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn and Tamil heroine Jyothika. The movie also marked his reunion with Jyothika after the 2001 romantic comedy ‘Dum Dumm Dumm’.
