In a recent candid conversation, she opened up about how her family once owned vast land in Mumbai but lost everything across two generations. Farah Khan revealed that her grandfather, Aman Gul Pathan, once owned a large stretch of land in Khar West, including the Khar-Danda locality. This lesser-known chapter of her family history came up during a conversation with composer Ismail Darbar and his son Zaid Darbar.

According to the director-choreographer, the property was not sold but donated. Her grandfather gave away the entire estate to a mosque. However, after his death, the land was gradually encroached upon, and the family was left with no legal claim or ownership. Highlighting the scale of the loss, she even joked during the interaction, "He died, and it was all gone. Is there any government policy to claim it back?"

A second blow: father’s financial collapse

If losing inherited wealth was not enough, the family faced another major setback during Farah’s childhood. Her father, filmmaker Kamran Khan, invested everything he had into the 1971 film Aisa Bhi Hota Hai, hoping it would be a turning point in his career.

However, the film failed at the box office, and the consequences were immediate and severe. Within a single weekend of its release, the family was pushed into deep financial trouble, losing their home and savings. Farah described this period as a complete collapse of their financial stability.

Speaking about those difficult years, Farah once told Ranveer Allahbadia, “We became paupers. I am not a nepo kid. My dad died a pauper. When he died, he had Rs 30 in his pocket.”

Growing up without privilege

Farah Khan has often addressed the assumption that she benefited from industry connections. While her mother Meneka Irani, is related to actors Daisy Irani and Honey Irani, Farah has maintained that her childhood was far removed from privilege. The financial struggles meant she had to find her own way into the industry.
