Watch the clock: Being punctual can help you be on good terms with the boss

Come rain or shine, it seems that Tesla’s employees need to be on time. Their no-filter CEO, Elon Musk, is said to fire hourly workers showing up a minute late more than nine times, according to reports. Though we don’t condone this rigid regimen, there is a thing or two to be said about punctuality. While it can benefit your company, it can also prove helpful to you. Take a look at why you should be tempted to be on time.

You’re the good guy
When someone keeps you waiting, it’s frustrating and sets any meeting off on the wrong foot. Don’t be that guy. When you’re on time for meetings and work, it shows that you value and respect other people’s time. You don’t give people the chance to start thinking badly about you and your traits simply because they didn’t have the time to. And an added benefit is that when you don’t keep people waiting, they are less likely to do so to you.

Morning blues
Getting out of bed in the morning can be tough for many of us. And when you have to hit the ground running, it can start your day on a stressful note. Make it a point to set your alarm a little early and to not hit the snooze button. Being punctual with your own schedule will make your day a lot easier and let you enjoy the little things, like relaxing and having a cup of coffee, reading the newspaper or simply listening to some music first thing in the morning, instead of rushing to get out the door. Feeling like you have a little personal time, even on a Monday morning, can go a long way in boosting your mood.

Work, work, work
Since you were not rushed and didn’t have to think of a new excuse, you can actually start your day on the right note. When you’re on time to work, you have the luxury of spending a few minutes organising your day peacefully and with a clear head. While this planning won’t take too much of your time, the benefits are tremendous to your career as well as peace of mind. You will be able to sort out your tasks based on priority, and possibly finish work earlier, which means you have more time to yourself at the end of the day.

Better bonds
Being punctual can actually make you have a better bond with your boss and co-workers. Since work is generally team co-ordination, it helps to be on time so that processes can move smoothly because you’re not holding up anyone else’s job.
