Is there a Korean hair-washing technique?
There is no single officially recognised Korean hair-washing method. Instead, Korean hair care is increasingly associated with a scalp-first philosophy, where the scalp is cleansed and treated with the same attention given to facial skin.In a recent article by Vogue about Korean hair care, it describes the approach as one that focuses on gentle, cumulative care, scalp health, hydration and targeted repair. Beauty experts quoted by the publication say Korean hair-care routines often use scalp-focused products such as scaling treatments, tonics and ampoules, while lightweight essences are used to smooth and protect the lengths. Some routine may involve scalp analysis, gentle cleansing, exfoliation, steaming, thorough rinsing, scalp treatments and massage.
The result is less about one miracle product and more about creating a consistent routine that keeps the scalp clean and balanced while reducing unnecessary damage to the hair shaft.
Step 1: Start with a scalp-focused cleanse
The first principle of Korean-inspired hair care is simple: pay attention to the scalp, not just the hair lengths. Korean hair-care products increasingly include scalp shampoos designed around concerns such as excess oil, buildup and irritation. Vogue's April 2026 report on Korean scalp tonics noted that scalp shampoos are considered the foundation of many Korean scalp-care routines, while scalp scalers may be used periodically to remove buildup and excess oil. When shampooing, gently massage the product into the scalp using your fingertips. There is no need to aggressively scrub the skin or scratch it with your nails.
Step 2: Try a scalp scaler once or twice a week
One of the more distinguinish elements of Korean hair care is exfoliation, not for skin, but for a squeaky clean scalp. Scalp scalers are designed to remove accumulated sebum, dead skin cells and product residue. According to Vogue's coverage of Korean scalp-care practices, Korean scalp-spa treatments may begin with gentle exfoliation using enzyme powders, BHA-based liquids or herbal exfoliants. However, more exfoliation does not necessarily mean a healthier scalp.Hair expert Jay Small, quoted by Vogue, cautioned against aggressive physical scrubbing and explained that buildup can contribute to itching and scratching. The article notes that gentler clarifying shampoos or chemical exfoliants can be used as a reset instead of harsh scrubbing. For home care, follow the instructions on the particular product and avoid using a strong exfoliating treatment too frequently, especially if your scalp is sensitive.
Step 3: Massage your scalp gently
Everyone loves a good scalp massage. Apart from its benefits, it's also relaxing. And this is an important feature of Korean head-spa treatments. During professional treatments, the scalp is massaged after cleansing and treatment application. It is part of the process used to relax the scalp and support circulation. At home, use the pads of your fingertips and make gentle circular movements across the scalp. Avoid scratching with your fingernails or pulling at the hair. It is important to distinguish between supporting a healthy scalp environment and treating hair loss. A massage can be relaxing and may improve the experience of applying a scalp treatment, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed hair-growth treatment.
Step 4: Apply a scalp tonic or ampoule
This is where Korean hair care most closely resembles Korean skin care. Generally after shampooing our hair, we end it with a conditioner, and call it a day. However, Korean-inspired routines introduced a lightweight scalp tonic, essence or ampoule. Scalp tonics are lightweight treatments intended to hydrate and calm the scalp, while more concentrated ampoules or serums may be used for specific concerns such as thinning or sensitivity.Korean hair-care formulations may contain ingredients familiar from skin care, including peptides, green tea, centella asiatica, panthenol and ceramides. Some products also contain caffeine or ginseng.

Step 5: Condition the lengths, not just the roots
Now that the scalp is clean, the focus next turns to the hair strands, which needs equal attention and protection. After shampooing, apply conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends, particularly if your hair is dry, damaged, coloured or heat-styled.The American Academy of Dermatology recommends conditioning after shampooing because conditioner helps moisturise and detangle the hair while reducing breakage and split ends. For fine or straight hair, the AAD recommends concentrating conditioner on the ends. People with dry or curly hair may need conditioning throughout more of the hair length.
This distinction is important because applying rich products directly to an oily scalp may leave the roots looking greasy or weighed down.
Step 6: Finish with a lightweight hair essence
How to achieve that salon-like glossy, lustrous hair? Well, in Korean hair care routine, lightweight essences and oils help create a polished look, without weighing down your hair. Apply a small amount to damp or dry mid-lengths and ends, depending on the product instructions. The American Academy of Dermatology also notes that leave-in conditioners and detanglers can help reduce breakage, split ends and frizz. For fine hair, start with a very small amount. Too much oil or serum can quickly make the hair appear flat rather than glossy.
Step 7: Dry your hair without rough handling
The final step of the hair care routine is drying the locks. Wet hair is fragile, so avoid aggressively rubbing it with a towel. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water and wrap the hair in a soft cloth or microfiber towel. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends gentle handling of wet hair and suggests using a microfiber towel to help it dry more quickly, reducing the amount of time spent using a blow-dryer.If you use a hair dryer, keep the heat at a comfortable level and avoid holding it close to one section of hair for too long.
