Flying in business or first class is something many travellers dream about, but the price difference from an economy ticket can often be huge. While premium cabins are increasingly being sold instead of handed out for free, travel experts say there are still situations where passengers can improve their chances of getting a better seat without paying extra.

According to travel experts, timing, flexibility and simple courtesy can sometimes work in your favour. Free upgrades have become less common as airlines sell more premium seats than before, but there are still a few tricks that could increase your chances.

Why free upgrades have become harder

Airlines have changed the way they manage premium cabins in recent years. According to CNBC, more travellers are paying for premium seats than ever before, reducing the number of complimentary upgrades available.


Delta Air Lines President Glen Hauenstein told CNBC: "We gave them away based on a frequent flyer system. The incentive was to spend as least as possible, fly as long as possible and get upgraded as often as possible. That led to a position where our most valued products were the biggest loss leaders."

Today, airlines earn a much larger share of their revenue from premium cabins, making free upgrades more competitive.

1. Pick a special meal when booking

According to Unilad, travel experts at eShores say passengers who request vegetarian, gluten-free or halal meals may sometimes benefit from cabin reshuffles.

"Vegetarian, gluten-free or halal meals are prepared separately and loaded in specific quantities, so airlines often seat these passengers earlier to keep service running smoothly," the company explained, as per Unilad.

Seats closer to the front are often considered more desirable because passengers can leave the aircraft faster, experience less cabin noise and receive meal service earlier.

2. Ask politely at the boarding gate

Rather than requesting an upgrade during check-in, experts suggest asking at the boarding gate. Gate agents usually have the latest information about no-shows and unsold premium seats, making them better placed to offer last-minute upgrades if available.

Gavin Lapidus, company director at eShores, said: "It's rarely about who spends the most; it's about timing, flexibility and making things easy for staff when plans change at the last minute."

He added: "When flights are reshuffled, or better rooms suddenly become available, polite and informed guests are often the first people staff think to reward. Knowing when to ask and how to approach it can genuinely turn a standard booking into a luxury experience."

3. Be friendly and appreciate the crew

Good manners may not guarantee an upgrade, but airline staff say they do notice passengers who treat them with respect.

Lisa Wilkes, a flight attendant with 15 years of experience, told eShores: "We see a lot of super difficult and mean passengers, so when someone does something nice, we really appreciate it. Often, a gift means you'll get extra special service or even complimentary snacks."

Some travellers even carry a small box of chocolates or another inexpensive gift for the cabin crew as a gesture of appreciation.

4. Join airline loyalty programmes and watch for upgrade offers

Even if you do not fly often, signing up for an airline's loyalty programme can improve your chances over time. According to Skyscanner, members are generally more likely to receive upgrade opportunities than passengers without an account.

Travellers should also keep checking their emails before departure. Airlines sometimes send discounted business-class upgrade offers just hours before a flight, allowing passengers to move to a premium cabin for much less than the original fare difference.

5. Travel smart and stay flexible

Experts say your travel dates and check-in timing can also make a difference. Flying during quieter periods, when business demand is lower, may leave more premium seats available.

Skyscanner also notes that both checking in very early and, in some cases, checking in later on overbooked flights have helped some travellers receive upgrades. However, waiting until the last minute comes with the risk of missing check-in altogether, so it should be approached carefully.

While there is no guaranteed formula for getting upgraded, industry experts agree that being flexible, polite and prepared gives passengers a better chance of enjoying a premium experience without paying the full premium price.
