Ankita Sheth is making the most of her time at home as she is saving a lot of commuting hours.
Work from home has always been a part of Vista Rooms Co-Founder Ankita Sheth’s life but the extended lockdown means that she’s converted a part of a home into her office for the long term. “I have also moved my portable library here, so whenever I get time, I dig through books,” she says.
The co-founder of Vista Rooms also feels connected to her team thanks to her virtual office, where everyone on her team is accessible on Zoom. “Every morning we all gather and play a motivational song that uplifts our spirits. Being able to see our workforce in a single frame gives joy, and this mainly helps in seamless coordination amongst the team. We are exhibiting higher productivity as well,” she shares.
Time management Sheth is making the most of her time at home, and likes that she’s got a few extra hours in her day thanks to her lack of commute. Work in just a hop, skip and jump away now. “The new work arrangements have also given me time to introspect and observe in tranquillity without getting lost in the noise. However, network connectivity is a drawback as it is not as seamless as in the office,” she adds.
Her trick to make things go as smooth as possible? Time management. “That has been the most significant learning. Initially, I had faced a little random schedule, but over the period, I have adopted in scheduling tasks based on the priorities,” she says.
This included trying to finish her work within a 9 hour frame and then spend the rest of her time on family and herself. “Once I started maintaining this time frame, it is came to be a lot easier to manage both home and office,” she recommends. Apart from this, Sheth is also participating in virtual offsites, created for their employees and partners to engage in happier activities to keep them inspired and motivated.
Sheth is keeping her own spirits up by reaching out to old friends, distant relatives and even her old teachers. “The human race is fragile and social bonding is a need. The world around us can be crushed in a moment, and that future is a blessing. So I have made a conscious effort to reach out. This feeling to reach out and connect with all of them after so many years throws a perspective,” she says.

“For office culture to revive and survive, office spaces are looking at a pretty drastic alteration of layouts and design,” says Pankaj Poddar, the co-founder of Hipcouch, a Mumbai based Interior Design Company. He says the new normal will also see some reversal.
“We will see the reversing of very hot trends of open offices and shared desks.” While we wait for the official decrees, here’s what the rough framework is looking like so far according to Poddar.

For now, private offices have been advised to open with only between 33-55% strength in most states in India. Besides what we hope will also mean a reduced commute to work thanks to less traffic, this also allows for social distancing at the office.

Since offices will not be at maximum capacity, there is scope to ensure enough physical distance between two desks by simply skipping one in the middle. At the very least, or in addition, fitting a screen around each desk is also a good way to achieve this. Hot desking is now a no-go.

The way 2020 is going, it’s hard to predict anything this year with any accuracy, so we have no idea what monsoon will bring, but opening as many windows as you possibly can will increase ventilation and we suspect that a lot of offices will consider the option. Too hot? Your office may need to get a humidifier system in place to create a tougher climate for viruses.

Meetings should be conducted in open spaces as far as possible instead of the traditional closed conference room setting. And maybe the joke about how “this meeting could have been an email” can stop being funny and actually be something to think about.

A strict limit on how many people can crowd into a lift at one time may save you some of that awkward elevator silence, but it also means a longer wait every time you want to move from one floor to another. A good time to reassess your relationship with the staircase (your step counter will be a thing of pride at the end of each day!)

Yes, this may come to an end as well. Be prepared to carry your own water bottles, coffee mugs and cutlery to the office. A common pool of all these items is just a bad idea.

Whether this is good news to you or exactly the opposite, travelling for business will see a drastic drop, replaced instead by Zoom calls. Travelling anywhere is probably unwise for at least the next several months anyway, even as domestic flights are slowly opening up. Also, obviously don’t count on any outstation off-sites anytime soon.
