Fake endorsements and online scams have become so common over the last few years that founders are taking to social media platforms to warn their customers and fans to be more cautious.
Billionaire founder and serial entrepreneur Richard Branson recently took to social media to break down some popular online and phishing scams that involved or used his name. He revealed two things he never does on social media and how followers can tell the real Richard Branson from the fakes.
Don’t believe everything you read “Even if it’s a verified account with a blue tick, know that I never direct message anyone, nor does any of my team,” he said in a delightful animated video on how to spot a scam before it’s too late. He also specified that he never endorses any get-rich-quick schemes.
“This is a growing problem, with cases of fraud, including online scams, topping UK crime statistics for the first time in 2019 and costing UK consumers £190bn per year,” the founder wrote on his blog.

He urged followers to be on their guard and to report any suspicious cases that featured him or Virgin to the company’s new reporting portal.
Branson is not the first founder to caution his followers. A few weeks ago, Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma also asked customers to remain vigilant and not fall for scam messages and emails from fraudsters pretending to be company officials.
