Here's all you need to know about the ICC's demerit point system.

Virat Kohli got his third demerit point during Sunday's T20 match against South Africa where the series ended tied 1-1.
The Indian skipper has accumulated three demerit points since he received his first in the Centurion Test on January 15, 2018.

Here's more about the ICC's demerit point system:

During India's T20 match against South Africa where the series ended tied 1-1, Virat Kohli got his third demerit point. In Sunday's match, the Indian cricket captain made shoulder contact with South African bowler, Beuran Hendricks while taking a run.

Previously on two other occasions, Kohli has gathered demerit points with a maximum of four allowed in a 24-month period. These are on a player's personal disciplinary record and then get expunged after that time period.

As per the ICC Code of Conduct, a Level 1 breach carries a minimum penalty which is an official reprimand. It also has a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of the player's match fee and either one or two demerit points.

Level 1 offences include showing any sort of dissent at an umpire's decision, using obscene, offensive or insulting language or gestures, excessive appealing and aggressive pointing towards the pavilion by any member of a fielding team when a batsman gets out among others.

Four or more demerit points are converted into suspension points leading to a player getting banned for a particular period of time. Like two suspension points mean either a one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is ban depending on which game is first.

In the coming months, India has the ongoing series against South Africa, then a series against Bangladesh at home in November. Then there are series with West Indies, Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand.

There is a lot of cricket left to play and Kohli has to walk a thin line when it comes to his discipline.

In the 2010 Ashes series against England, which Australia lost, Ponting got into a heated debate with on-field umpire Aleem Dar. “I understand that I overstepped the mark yesterday. I was charged with dissent for having a prolonged discussion with the umpires out in the middle. Looking back at it last night I realised that it didn’t look good,” Ponting later said in interviews.
