Vikram Seth spurred bank job to write 'A Suitable Boy'

Right after receiving a literary lifetime achievement award, Vikram Seth's mother Leila rewound to his student years. The author had studied at Oxford and Stanford as a scholarship student. When he completed his PhD at Stanford, he was offered a job with the World Bank. His parents, Leila and Prem asked him to take it up and work for five years so that he may get a pension. They reasoned he could continue to write poetry thereafter, for the rest of his life. But Seth said that if he took the job, he"d be "tied with strings of gold". He"d "ruin whatever lit t le imagination" he had and may not be able to write poetry.

His solution was that they support him instead. He argued since they did not pay for his education, they support him for three years. Those three years turned into seven. But the Seths aren"t complaining. The result was A Suitable Boy.
