Tamil superstar Vijay Thalapathy's recent movie 'Varisu' is winning hearts since its release last week a day before Pongal (January 11).

In just five days, the action thriller has crossed the box-office collection of Rs 150 crore (worldwide). Production house Sri Venkateswara Creations took to Twitter to confirm the news.

Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, the Telugu version of the family drama, 'Varasudu', was released on January 14.

The movie was also released in the Hindi language and earned almost Rs 4 crore at the box-office in one week. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that the movie witnessed a good jump during the weekend.

As far as the global numbers are concerned, 'Virasu' crossed the million-dollar mark in the USA, A$500K mark in Australia and has been the top-trending movie in Malaysia - one of the big markets for South Indian movies.

Besides Vijay, the Tamil-language action stars Rashmika Mandanna as the female lead. The cast also includes Prabhu, Sharathkumar, Shaam, SJ Suriya, Srikanth, Prakash Raj, Sangeetha, Yogi Babu and Kushbhoo.

Produced by Dil Raju, the music of the movie has been composed by Thaman, the cinematography is by Karthik Palani, and Praveen KL is in charge of the editing table.

The Pongal release clashed with superstar Ajith Kumar-starrer 'Thunivu' and Chiranjeevi-led comedy 'Waltair Veerayya'.

'Varisu' versus 'Thunivu' was billed as the biggest clash in Tamil cinema in recent times as Vijay and Ajith are locking horns after nine years.

In 2014, Vijay and Ajith had releases on the same day with 'Veeram' of Ajith clashing with 'Jilla' of Vijay. Hence, the fans were thrilled to see their favourite stars on the big screen.

The theatres witnessed a heavy rush across Chennai. After the release, the state police had to resort to lathicharge after some fans turned violent and started tearing the movie posters.
