The team, popularly known as Virosh, has sought an investigation into the online material and submitted links and supporting evidence for examination. They have also urged social media users to avoid sharing unverified claims about the actors.
What does the complaint say?
According to a statement issued by the actors’ team and cited by ANI, the complaint was submitted in person by a representative. It identifies allegedly misleading posts, fabricated claims, manipulated screenshots, impersonation and targeted harassment circulating across digital platforms.Vijay and Rashmika's team has maintained that it respects freedom of speech and people's right to criticise public figures. However, they have asked for line to be drawn between expressing an opinion and presenting allegedly false or manipulated material as genuine information.
“While we fully respect freedom of speech, individual opinions and the right to express criticism, there is a clear distinction between expressing an opinion and presenting fabricated, manipulated or materially misleading claims as facts,” said the team in its statement.
They have also asked the authorities to check if the material was linked to a coordinated or paid campaign. The team said instances of creating, reposting or circulating potentially unlawful content could be assessed separately, with legal action pursued wherever necessary.
Why are Vijay and Rashmika facing backlash?
The controversy happened online after the couple joined as guests on the latest season of Koffee With Karan. In the show, Rashmika recalled telling Vijay that they should get married. She said he asked her to ask him this 100 times, and she then asked him to get married for nearly a year. This conversation led to mixed reactions online as some viewers of the show questioned the dynamics of their relationship, with several social media users criticising Vijay's response.
Clips from the interview and their older public appearances later also circulated online, leading to further speculation about their relationship.
Rashmika and Vijay respond to trolls
On October 26, Rashmika had addressed this backlash with a lengthy Instagram statement, in which she described the online reaction as an “angry mob” and saying people had misunderstood their conversation. She explained that Vijay had wanted them to take time to understand each other and consider the practical aspects of marriage. Defending their relationship, she wrote, “And yes, I am OBSESSED with my man. When did that become a bad thing?”
Rashmika also criticised people targeting her family, calling such behaviour “bullying dressed up as feminism”. She said Vijay had supported her through difficult periods of time and added that she was happy in her marriage.
Vijay also responded with a social media post by describing Rashmika as his best friend and wife. He wrote that they were “both gloriously happy” and pushed back against those criticising their relationship.
