View: Is 'Avengers: Endgame' worth waking up at 4 am for?

11 years and 21 movies later, this is the closure you need for your relationship with superheroes.

Many of you might not know this, but copy editors who work for a newspaper usually get back home around 1 am after dealing with tonnes of jumbled sentences, headlines, commas and what not, leaving little space and energy for creative pursuits. This, in turn, makes it quite difficult for them to wake up early morning even for a tiny earthquake, forget a movie. But then, desperate times call for desperate measures.

Let me first address the titular question. Is Avengers Endgame a film for which one would wake up at 4 am to catch the first show on the first day? The answer, in my view, is an affirmative yes.

I watched 'Iron Man', first of this larger-than-life series 22-movie franchise, in 2008 at a single-screen theatre in Patna. Believe it or not, they called it Loh Purush. Yes, it was the time when English films would usually not be released in the original language in places such as my hometown. That movie ended with a one-liner from Robert Downey, Jr. who shocked the world by saying, “Main hu Loh Purush” — “I am Iron Man.”

These words kicked off a relationship that would probably last forever between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its fans.

A real relationship with the surreal superheroes.

Eleven years and 21 movies later, the world now is a different place. Most of us are flooded with immediate reviews and spoilers on our devices. And you certainly don’t want to be that guy who has not watched the film while the rest of the world is already talking about who dies and who lives in the movie. Thus, a 5 am show seems to be just the right thing.

As a fan, one could possibly not ask for a more befitting culmination to the series that has given us some of the best cinematic experiences in the past 11 years. From the first time Avengers came together to fight it out against Thor’s reckless, but ridiculously charming brother Loki, to the time when the team was at a crossroads in 'Civil War'. From the time when Captain America was a product of a lab experiment to the man who now takes the world by storm by wielding the godly hammer of the worth one. From the time when Tony Stark was a “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” to the one who reads bedtime stories (the shortest ever) to his daughter. And who could forget the theatres full of sobbing folks when Peter Parker said in his last moments, “I don’t feel so good, Mr Stark.” The timeline is enormous and overwhelming.

The three-hour-two-minute-long, scintillating, time-travelling journey into the world of superheroes is not just a movie that you watch and leave — it’s a trip down the memory lane. It reminds you of when you were probably a school kid or a college student or whatever else and how you were in awe of the fact that the US army could actually have one of those Iron Man suits (conspiracy theories aplenty). It reminds you of how going to the theatre was your only option for watching these films until about a year or so later when Star Movies or HBO would come out with it on “Blockbuster Sunday.” It reminds you of how not just the characters in the movies, but you have grown/changed to become who you are today. It reminds you that Tony Stark does actually have a heart. It reminds you that the mighty Thor who once called humans “tiny little creatures” could also have an emotional and physical breakdown. It reminds you of how your favourite fictional superheroes are as vulnerable as you, yet as strong as you want them to be in times of crisis.

You left 'Infinity War' in tears, but there was still some hope and a theory to ponder upon. You will probably leave 'Endgame' in tears, too — unsure of whether to feel good that Thanos is now gone and our heroes have won or bad that some of this will (might) never return.

'Avengers: Endgame' makes you cry, laugh, jump, cheer, but most significantly, it makes you want to be a better version of yourself.

It’s the end of an era and I suggest you watch it. After all, no amount of money ever bought a second of time.
