Unmadham OTT release date confirmed: When and where to watch the Malayalam psychological crime thriller starring Kunchacko Boban and Lijomol

Kunchacko Boban and Lijomol Jose’s Malayalam psychological crime thriller Unmadham is now set for its digital release after making its way to theatres earlier this year. Directed by Kiran Das, the film revolves around a police officer, an old unresolved case and a mystery that slowly begins to affect his own state of mind.

The film, which was released worldwide on July 31, combines an investigation with psychological and supernatural elements. Now, after its theatrical run, the makers have confirmed when audiences can watch it from home.

Unmadham OTT release date and platform

Unmadham will start streaming on Sony LIV from September 4, 2026. The makers announced the digital release on August 24, confirming the platform and date for the film’s OTT premiere.


The announcement came with the post, “Some cases are solved. Some aren’t. But then there’s one case file nobody even dares to touch!!” That mysterious case file is at the centre of the story and becomes the reason Shelly gets pulled into an investigation that soon turns much more personal.

The film opened in theatres on July 31 and received mixed reviews during its theatrical run.

What is Unmadham about?

Unmadham follows Shelly, a police constable who is not very happy with his routine professional life. He has another ambition, though. Shelly wants to become a screenwriter and takes a break from his job to pursue that dream.

Things do not go according to plan, however, and financial problems eventually force him to return to the police department. After a mistake at work, he is transferred to a remote station. It is there that he comes across an old case file concerning the mysterious death of a young woman.

The case has a reputation at the station. People consider it unlucky and are unwilling to get involved with it. Shelly takes an interest in it anyway, partly because he sees the case as something that could also become material for the screenplay he wants to write.

What begins as an attempt to understand an old case gradually starts getting inside Shelly’s head. He begins having disturbing visions and nightmares, and the difference between his investigation, his screenplay and his memories starts becoming difficult to understand.

His personal life is affected too, particularly his relationship with his wife Soumya, played by Lijomol Jose. As Shelly becomes more consumed by the case, his behaviour becomes increasingly unpredictable. The mystery therefore becomes more than just a police investigation and starts turning into a psychological battle for him.

Kunchacko Boban and Lijomol Jose lead the cast

Kunchacko Boban plays Shelly, while Lijomol Jose plays his wife Soumya. The supporting cast includes Siddique, Sudheesh, Vishakh Nair, Sabumon Abdusamad, Kottayam Nazeer, Gokulan, Arun Cherukavil, Unni Lalu, Shaju Sreedhar, Krishna Prabha, Kiran Peethambaran, Vishnu, Raina Radhakrishnan, Sijoy Varghese and Vigneshwar Suresh.

The screenplay has been written by Shahi Kabir, while Kiran Das has directed the film. Unmadham marks Das’ directorial debut after his work as an editor. The film also brings Kunchacko Boban and Shahi Kabir together again after Nayattu and Officer on Duty, both of which featured Boban in police roles.
