Even after toiling hard at work, sometimes our efforts do not bear fruit. We sacrifice sleep, put in extra hours, work on weekends, juggle multiple tasks at once, and have to be constantly on our toes. Even then, company authorities fail to recognise or acknowledge our contributions, declining our increment requests while pushing us to work harder. In a similar instance, career counsellor Simon Ingari shared a post on X where an employee was repeatedly rejected for a promotion despite genuine dedication. But one decision he made for himself changed his fate, leaving his boss shocked.

Denied raise for years, employee finds shocking pay gap

According to Simon Ingari, the employee had been denied a salary raise for four consecutive years. Every time his boss told the employee that he would be given an increment once he was ‘ready’, but sadly, the time never came. Despite the repeated setbacks, the employee continued to put his best foot forward by working late hours, navigating through additional shifts, and even training new hires, believing that loyalty and perseverance would eventually pay off.

A major turning point came in his life when the employee accidentally discovered an intern’s offer letter left on an office printer. To his surprise, the intern, fresh out of college with no prior experience, was earning significantly more than him. Rather than reacting impulsively, the employee chose to remain calm and kept the information to himself.

In the following weeks, the employee made a quiet but strategic move. He secured a job offer from one of his company’s biggest competitors. Notably, he also convinced two other senior employees to join him, professionals considered crucial to the organisation he was currently working for. The situation escalated when his boss learned about the employee’s decision to switch jobs with 2 of his colleagues.

Quiet exit stuns boss, sparks debate on loyalty vs self-worth

The boss was furious, confronting the employee and calling it a ‘betrayal’. Questioning how he could make such a decision after years of service, the boss demanded an explanation. The employee, however, responded calmly with a response that reflected years of pent-up frustration. Without any hesitation, he replied that he was ‘finally ready’ for a promotion, which was never granted in his current company.

The incident sparked mixed reactions with some colleagues criticising his actions as selfish, while others supported his decision, viewing it as a long-overdue step towards self-respect. The employee’s mother expressed concern about burning bridges, while his wife, though supportive, wondered if the situation could have been handled differently.

Simon Ingari’s story, however, highlighted that consistent effort does not always guarantee recognition. It also raises larger questions about workplace loyalty, fairness, and self-worth, suggesting that sometimes, choosing to move on may be the only way to truly move forward.
