Don't underestimated the power of standing on one leg.
Our life is all about finding the right balance. And, a new study suggests why it is important to stand on one leg for as little as 10 seconds.

The inability of being able to stand on one leg can be a sign of something more serious than you think. The researchers found that people who find it difficult to balance on one leg for 10 seconds in their middle and older age are almost twice as likely to die within 10 years than those who can. An 84 per cent risk of mortality from any cause was recorded.

The findings of the study show that people who couldn't balance themselves on one leg had a greater risk of stroke. Moreover, such people also performed poorly in cognitive tests, suggesting a possibility of mental decline and dementia. Dementia is a term used for cognitive impairment that makes it challenging for an individual to remember, think or make decisions.

Published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the 12-year-long study was conducted between 2008 and 2020 on 1,702 people (aged between 51 and 75) who showed signs of stable movement.

For the study, the researchers asked the participants to place the front of their free foot on the back of the opposite lower leg while keeping their arms by their sides and their gaze fixed straight ahead. Up to three attempts on either foot were allowed.

One in five (21 per cent) of the participants failed the test. Over the next decade, around 123 people passed away due to various causes.

The benefits are not restricted to just standing on one leg. Having an active lifestyle can also make a major difference.

Earlier this month, another study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine said that being active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can reduce breast cancer risks.

Data collected from 130,957 women of European ancestry showed that exercising and curbing sedentary behaviour significantly cuts the risk of women getting breast cancer by 40 per cent.

The study found that people with genes indicating they sat down for longer periods had a 104 per cent higher risk of triple-negative breast cancer - the hardest-to-treat form of the disease.

The findings were consistent across hormone-negative tumour types, which tend to grow faster than breast cancers with oestrogen or progesterone receptors. It also provides 'strong evidence' that more overall physical activity and less sitting time are likely to reduce breast cancer risk.

Although full understanding of what causes Alzheimer’s is not yet known, scientists suggest that a genetic mutation may be the cause in people with early-onset of the disease. Whereas, its late-onset arises from a complex series of brain changes that may occur over decades. The most common causes of Alzheimer’s include a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors.

According to the University of Sheffield, obesity puts a severe strain on the cardiovascular system of a person and damages the brain vessel’s wall. This further results in high levels of inflammation and toxicity to brain cells, poor metabolism and irregular blood flow to the brain.
