For many older homeowners, the biggest threat to staying in a family home is not a mortgage but the rising cost of property taxes. In Atlanta, filmmaker Tyler Perry stepped in with a $750,000 donation to help low-income seniors clear overdue tax bills and protect themselves from future increases an intervention that has since become part of a wider effort to prevent longtime residents from being priced out of their neighbourhoods. Announced in February 2023, Perry’s contribution was designed to help more than 300 seniors pay back property taxes and support a pilot programme offering tax-increase relief to another 100. The story is about more than a celebrity donation: it highlights the financial pressure that can come with rising property values, even for people who have lived in their homes for decades.

Why Rising Property Taxes Became A Problem For Atlanta’s Seniors

Atlanta’s rapid development has brought investment to the city, but rising home values have also increased tax bills for some longtime residents. For seniors living on fixed incomes, those additional costs can put years of homeownership at risk. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens praised Perry’s intervention, saying: “Atlanta’s growth and prosperity should not come at the expense of our legacy residents.” He added that the donation would help residents remain in the communities they had built.

The original $750,000 contribution was intended to clear outstanding city, county and school property taxes for more than 300 low-income seniors. It also supported a pilot scheme that would cover tax increases for 100 seniors. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Perry had pledged a further $500,000 annually for four years, taking his planned contribution to $2.75 million.

How The Programme Is Helping Seniors Stay In Their Homes

The initiative later developed into Atlanta’s Anti-Displacement Tax Relief Fund, which helps eligible older homeowners manage property tax increases. In October 2025, local public broadcaster WABE reported that the programme had expanded citywide after an initial pilot in selected neighbourhoods. Its funding included $10 million from the Centennial Yards Housing Trust Fund alongside Perry’s contribution.

The programme is designed to cover eligible increases above a homeowner’s base property tax amount for up to 20 years, subject to continued eligibility. Invest Atlanta says participants must generally be at least 60 years old, have owned their Atlanta home since 2015, meet income requirements and use the property as their primary residence. The need remains significant. In March 2026, Invest Atlanta announced that it had approved 425 senior homeowners for the programme since its launch in 2024. It also said additional funding would allow previously unsuccessful applicants to be reconsidered.

A Personal Connection To Giving Back

Perry’s philanthropy has often focused on practical needs, including food assistance and support for families facing hardship. He also built a major film studio in Atlanta, a city closely associated with his professional success. His contribution to the senior tax-relief effort reflects a different aspect of that connection: helping longtime residents remain in the city as it changes around them. For older homeowners, staying put means preserving more than a building. It can mean keeping close to neighbours, familiar streets and the community they helped shape.

More Than A Celebrity Donation

Perry’s $750,000 gift offered immediate help with overdue tax bills, while the wider programme aims to address the longer-term pressure of rising property taxes. Its expansion shows how private donations can help launch local solutions, although sustained public and private funding remains important.

As Atlanta continues to grow, the challenge is ensuring that longtime residents can share in the city’s future without being forced out by its rising costs. For the seniors helped by this initiative, the most meaningful result may be simple: the chance to stay in the homes and communities they already call their own.
