Apple triggers eSIM wave, here’s all you need to know

The recently launched iPhone 14 will only have eSIM functionality in the US, while adding a physical SIM slot in global variants, paving the way for mainstream adoption of the eSIM.

Apple recently announced the iPhone 14 with one particular feature being the talk of the tech world – eSIM. In the US, Apple will be releasing eSIM-only iPhones, while global variants will have a physical SIM slot as well. Apple will also expand the eSIM functionality on other iPhone and iPad models.

What is eSIM?

We’ve seen SIM card slots on phones and the iPad for years. It is a nail-sized hardware component that attaches itself to prefabricated circuitry – the SIM slot. It also functions as an ID for carriers in the GSM cellular network.

An eSIM is a programmable identity module embedded in the phone’s circuitry and functions much like a physical SIM card. Network carriers must upgrade their systems to incorporate eSIM usage. Fortunately, the top three networks in India – Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea already have eSIM capabilities.

Are eSIMs better?

eSIMs are more convenient. Instead of having to look after the physical SIM card, especially when transferring between different devices, you can simply send a request to the carrier and enjoy network connectivity. Opening the SIM slot is yet another point of inconvenience, as the pin is never to be found when you need it.

Are you locked on to a carrier with eSIM?

This is entirely dependent on the policy of the network carrier. In the US, phones are locked on to the carrier even with SIM cards, so, it wouldn’t be too different if that were the case with eSIMs as well. However, in India, that is not the case. Moreover, the iPhones in India would come with a physical SIM slot as well, for added flexibility.

How to activate eSIM?

Activation of eSIM is similar to a regular SIM card. SIM cards can also be ‘converted’ to an eSIM. The network providers will help in this regard.
