Toxic box office collection: Yash’s Kannada gangster movie sees sharp drop on Day 2, fails to match Dhurandhar 2 craze

Yash’s much-awaited gangster drama Toxic arrived in theatres on August 26 with huge expectations. The Geetu Mohandas directorial venture had the advantage of the casts' massive fan base and the success of the KGF franchise. However, while the film managed an impressive opening, its Day 2 numbers show a significant drop. The film also could not replicate the kind of second-day momentum seen with recent pan-India blockbusters such as Dhurandhar 2.

Toxic opened to mixed reviews but still managed to cross the Rs 100-crore mark in India on its first day. The film’s second-day performance, however, has raised questions about whether it can maintain its momentum over the crucial weekend.

Toxic box office collection Day 2

According to Sacnilk.com, Toxic collected Rs 36.40 crore net in India on Day 2, with the film being screened across 22,629 shows. The drop is substantial compared with its opening-day collection of Rs 101.10 crore net from 24,579 shows.


After two days, the Yash-starrer has earned Rs 137.50 crore net and Rs 164.50 crore gross in India. The film also continued to perform in overseas markets, where it earned Rs 10 crore on Thursday. Its total overseas gross collection has now reached Rs 26.25 crore.

Taking its domestic and international earnings together, Toxic has recorded a worldwide gross of Rs 190.75 crore after two days.

The film’s opening day had created considerable buzz as it became one of the biggest releases of Yash’s career. However, the second-day fall means the film has a tougher road ahead if it is to reach the bigger box office milestones associated with major pan-India releases.

Hindi market leads Day 2 collection

The Hindi version of Toxic emerged as the biggest contributor on Day 2. It earned around Rs 23 crore from 16,251 shows, recording an occupancy of 26%.

The Kannada version, despite contributing less in terms of total collection, recorded the highest occupancy among the major language versions. It earned Rs 8.50 crore from 1,678 shows at an occupancy of 51%.

The Telugu version collected around Rs 3 crore from 2,325 shows, with an occupancy of 21%. Tamil contributed Rs 1.50 crore from 2,016 shows at 17% occupancy. The Malayalam version earned around Rs 0.40 crore from 359 shows, recording 32% occupancy.

The numbers suggest that the Hindi market is currently playing an important role in keeping the film’s overall theatrical business strong. However, the sharp fall from Day 1 to Day 2 could become a concern if the trend continues into Friday.

Toxic vs Dhurandhar 2, Pushpa 2 and KGF 2

The Day 2 numbers become more significant when compared with some of the biggest pan-India films. Toxic’s Rs 36.40 crore net collection is considerably lower than the second-day figures recorded by several recent blockbusters.

Dhurandhar 2 reportedly earned around Rs 80.72 crore net in India on Day 2, while Pushpa 2 collected Rs 93.80 crore. Yash’s own KGF: Chapter 2 had earned approximately Rs 90.50 crore net on its second day. Meanwhile, RRR recorded around Rs 86.70 crore net on Day 2.

The comparison states the difference in momentum. While Toxic entered the Rs 100-crore club on its opening day, it could not maintain the same pace on Thursday. In particular, its Day 2 performance falls well short of the craze witnessed around Dhurandhar 2, which managed to maintain a much stronger run after its opening.

Interestingly, Toxic has still performed better than Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar during the first two days. Dhurandhar opened with around Rs 28 crore net in India across 14,057 shows and earned approximately Rs 33.10 crore on Day 2. Its two-day India net collection stood at around Rs 58 crore.

Toxic is a larger-than-life gangster drama revolve around the themes of power, love, betrayal and redemption. The story also explores the relationship between Raya and his son, Ticket. Alongside Yash, the film features Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria, Rukmini Vasanth and Huma Qureshi in key roles.
