NEW DELHI: Popular dating app Tinder will not allow users under 18 years of age to use its service, starting next week.

In an official statement to TechCrunch, Tinder's VP of communications Rosette Pambakian said, "On a platform that has facilitated over 11 billion connections, we have the responsibility of constantly assessing our different user experiences. Consistent with this responsibility, we have decided to discontinue service for under 18 users. We believe this is the best policy moving forward. This change will take effect next week."

When it was launched in 2012, Tinder allowed anyone above 13 years of age to use the app.

Pambakian also added that the company believed that it was the 'right thing to do'.

Tinder recently became the talk of the town with its advertisement, which showed an Indian mother approving of her daughter (in Tinder lingo) going on a date she fixed up using Tinder.

Tinder is also trying to fix its general perception as a casual dating or hook-up app. On social media platforms like Facebook, the service is aggressively promoting stories of Tinder matches that have led to marriages.
