Tips for the top boss before 30
What does it mean to call the shots early in life? Four not-yet-30-year-olds, who have ascended the corporate ladder faster, reveal how they have had to hit the road running

Ayesha Kapur, Co-founder and head of designs, Ayesha Age: 20

“I started to work in Ayesha accessories at 16, when my mother and I co-founded the brand. It was daunting to start out so young but I never felt less capable than those who I worked with. Being young allowed me a different perspective. Having worked with people older than me, I’ve learnt that it’s essential to give each other respect and act like equals whenever you are in a professional setup.”

Anushree Tainwala Director, marketing, Samsonite Age: 25

“In every working relationship, there is bound to be ego clashes, especially when you are younger in terms of experience and age. People tend to feel intimidated by your presence. I have tried to be humble in everyway and listen to my elder coworker’s suggestions. However, my father also taught me to always voice my opinions. It is not about saying ‘no’ but more about making others realise what is the rationale behind your decision.”

Karan Valecha Director, Gold’s Gym India Age: 29

“I am a senior executive at Valecha Engineering Limited and am also part of Core Group as a Director at Gold’s Gym India. Age is just a number. Young people are establishing themselves professionally faster than their earlier generations did. At Gold’s Gym India, the team is youthful, so it is easy to work. At Valecha Engineering, of course, I have peers who are twice my age. Having said that, every individual brings something different to the table.”

Sahil Gilani, Director, sales and marketing Gits Food Age: 29

“I started work with an intent to learn and be a co-worker, not a boss to the existing staff that has been around for decades. Dealing with people twice your age can be hard, as you need to prove your worth to them. Young age is an advantage when you are working with older individuals who are looking to update themselves. However, it is also a disadvantage when they are not open minded. So being diplomatic always helps.”
