The future of work is inextricably linked to the health of the economy – more people in the workforce is thought of as being tantamount to good news. But the unemployment rate may not necessarily be an accurate proxy for economic activity.
Most industries now incorporate some degree of automation in their work flows, putting at risk blue collar employees who work as machinists and truck drivers. Project managers and programmers with expertise in artificial intelligence and robotics are in demand.
Their counterparts on the work floor are forced out of their jobs, or asked to take pay cuts. Job descriptions are changing across industries, and the outlook looks nebulous, according to a report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
WEF’s detailed list says that emotional intelligence, creativity, and ideation will be in demand. It further adds that recruiters will look at tapping individuals with skills needed to perform particular tasks, as opposed to qualified candidates who have to be reskilled for the job at hand. With more companies looking to hire freelancers for short-term gigs, it will be skills, and not job titles, that will help those seeking employment, strike out from the rest of the pack.
Moreover, the skills that are in demand today are likely to be outmoded in the next five years, highlighting the need for upskilling. Some jobs in the technology sector will also disappear. The WEF suggests that predominantly human qualities like “memory” and “leadership skills” will gradually become less relevant with advancement in technology.
However, WEF’s detailed list says that emotional intelligence, creativity, and ideation will be in demand, while skills like enforcing quality control, auditory and visual awareness will not be required in jobs of the future.
