Tiffany Haddish once lived in her car, survived on $500 a month; Then a stranger’s advice changed everything. She now owns 17 properties

There was a time when Tiffany Haddish deliberately parked away from other comedians because nearly everything she owned was inside her car. Years later, the Girls Trip star says she has built a real-estate portfolio of around 17 properties. Behind that remarkable turnaround was not just Hollywood success, but a piece of advice from a stranger that changed the way she handled every big paycheque.

A stranger gave Tiffany Haddish advice she never forgot

During a recent live recording of the Family Trips With the Meyers Brothers podcast, Haddish recalled taking a group holiday to China and Japan, where she met an accountant. According to Realtor.com, the accountant recommended a book about real-estate investing and gave her a simple strategy: once her movie career began making money, she should buy a property every year for 15 years. “No matter what happens with your career, you’ll be successful,” Haddish recalled the accountant telling her. The advice stuck. Haddish said she now has “like 17” properties and tries to buy one when she does a movie.

Before property came homelessness

Her current position is a dramatic contrast to her early years in comedy. Haddish has repeatedly spoken about living out of her car while trying to establish herself in Los Angeles. People reported in 2024 that Kevin Hart realised what was happening after noticing her belongings inside her vehicle. He gave her $300 for a hotel and later connected her with a real-estate agent.

The apartment she eventually found was hardly glamorous. Haddish recalled that it needed substantial work and had roaches, but the rent was just $500 a month. Remarkably, she later revealed that she still owns the property. Vanity Fair has also documented this difficult period, reporting that Haddish experienced homelessness while pursuing stand-up before Girls Trip transformed her into a mainstream Hollywood name.

Tiffany lived on $500 a month even after finding success

Tiffany's fear of becoming homeless again continued to shape her financial decisions after acting cheques grew larger. Tiffany previously told Cosmopolitan, as recounted by Realtor.com, that she bought her first house after landing The Carmichael Show. She kept her living expenses at around $500 a month and used earnings from the series and Keanu to pay off roughly half the house. Her Girls Trip cheque helped clear the remainder. “I used it to pay off the house because I was always afraid of being homeless again,” she said.

Real estate became more than personal security

Haddish's property strategy has also developed a social purpose. In 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that she owned about a dozen properties in South Los Angeles, with many rented to organisations providing housing for foster youth. Haddish herself spent years in foster care as a child. Her journey from hiding a car filled with belongings to owning around 17 properties is not simply a celebrity rags-to-riches story. For Haddish, property appears to represent something fame alone could never guarantee: the security of knowing she has somewhere to call home, regardless of what happens next in Hollywood.
