MUMBAI: The Aamir Khan-Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ may not have received rave reviews for storyline and screenplay, but the latest release from the Yash Raj stable has managed to shatter all the previous box office records for opening day and single-day collections.
Released on Thursday, November 8th, the film’s Hindi version did a net collection of Rs 50.75 crore as per YRF. The Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions together collected Rs 1.50 crore, taking the total collections to Rs 52.25 crore.
Prior to ‘Thugs of Hindostan' the biggest opening day collection record was held by Salman Khan-starrer ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’, which had collected Rs 40.35 crore in 2015.
YRF released ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ in 5,000 screens across India, out of which 4,400 screens are showing the film in Hindi, while the remaining 600 are carrying the dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu.
Interestingly, the film, despite its strong cast and larger-than-life visual spectacles, did not get favourable reviews. Film and trade analysts even called the movie “disappointing”, “painfully predictable” and “lavish, yet boring”.

“The film has made a historical opening and broken all previous records. I expect it to do Rs 150-160 crore business this weekend due to holiday season. But will it maintain the same pace of collection after the weekend is over remains to be seen,” said trade analyst and independent film distributor Shaaminder Malik.
Malik further said that on Friday, the occupancy was down in the morning and afternoon shows. “It has picked up in the latter half and expected to collect Rs 35 crore today,” said Malik.
Incidentally, ‘Thugs...” is the first film where Khan and Bachchan have worked together. As per YRF, the film has broken seven box office records -- highest all-time opening, first to cross Rs 50 crore on day 1, biggest single-day collection ever, biggest Diwali opener of all time, biggest opening day for Khan and Bachchan, biggest ever opening for a non sequel, and YRF’s highest opening ever.
“Thugs of Hindostan is the quintessential Hindi movie that we love to watch with our friends and families. We were lucky to get two of the biggest stars of our generation to come together for an out and out masala Diwali entertainer and we are humbled and ecstatic with the love and appreciation that audiences have showered on Thugs to help the film create box office history on day one,” director Vijay Krishna Acharya (Viktor) said.
