Three new iPhones, wireless charging mat AirPower, & more: What to expect from Apple’s big September event

The Cupertino-based tech giant's annual event is around the corner, and here's the rumour round-up.

Three new iPhones, wireless charging mat AirPower, & more: What to expect from Apple’s big September event
Apple’s big annual launch event is right around the corner and as usual, we’re expecting some major iPhone action. Consistent leaks, tips and rumours have led us to believe that Apple might be launching three iPhones plus a new iPad Pro, some accessories and there are even chances of a new MacBook Air and a redesigned Apple Watch.

Three New iPhones
The September event’s focus is always the iPhone. If you believe the grapevine, all the new iPhones will now take design cues from the current iPhone X and come with a notch style display. Of the three variants, two are expected to feature OLED displays (5.8-inch and 6.5-inch screen sizes) while the third one is expected to be a 6.1-inch LCD display. The LCD notch display iPhone could be the successor to the current iPhone 8/8Plus lineup. We’re expecting support for Apple Pencil on the 6.5-inch variant of the new iPhone and a 512GB storage option. Another leak points towards a possibility of a dual SIM variant too, although we think the chances are slim. Some of the things we know for sure are the improved hardware with a new processor, dual rear cameras and improved FaceID.

Two New iPads
Apple did not announce a new iPad Pro during the annual WWDC event this year. Maybe they needed more time, which means the September event is where we’ll see them. Apple could announce the successor to both models of the iPad Pro (10.5-inch and 12.9-inch). We’re expecting a new design with slimmer bezels and a missing home button (removed in favour of FaceID, like it was for iPhone X). We don’t expect a notch display on the iPad (doesn’t really work for tablets) but the removal of the home button could mean smaller/lighter iPads with the same screen size and the addition of gesture support. If the new iPad Pro is announced at the iPhone event, you can be sure that they will have the same updated hardware and camera as the new iPhones.

New MacBook Air
Apple updated the MacBook Pro line-up a few months back with 8th gen Intel processors and Radeon GPU’s. The MacBook Air has not received an update since June 2017 and it is hightime for a complete refresh. We’ve been salivating over leaks that show a new MacBook Air with retina display and slimmer bezels. The entry level variant is expected to have 256GB storage and the latest Intel processors. If the new MacBook Air is announced, you can be sure it will have USB Type-C ports (just like the Pro line-up, which allows for fast charging, multi-use and space saving). There is an outside chance that Apple might lay the MacBook Air to rest this year and focus only on the MacBook and Pro range.

Apple Watch Series 4
Currently, it is very difficult to differentiate between an Apple Watch, Watch 2 or Watch 3 — they all look nearly identical. Then again, it doesn’t make sense for Apple to radically change the same or display format because of legacy app support and existing watch bands. The logical conclusion if for Watch Series 4 to get a redesign with a larger display (and therefore slimmer bezels) in the same sizes. Since battery technology improves every year, we’re expecting a bigger battery without any change in the overall thickness. Plus, you can expect upgrades across the board in terms of health tracking, sensors and fitness monitoring.

New Accessories
AirPower, Apple’s wireless charging mat announced last year, has still not seen the light of day. We’re really hoping to see that this September. The AirPods are due for an upgrade and if we had our way, we would include active noise cancellation, imporved water/sweat resistance, better battery life, integrated biometric sensors for fitness tracking and a case with wireless charging built in.
