On the occasion of India's 77th Independence Day, Google Doodle paid homage to the country's rich textile heritage, celebrating the vibrant tapestry of India's cultural identity.

The intricate artwork, designed by New Delhi-based guest artist Namrata Kumar, is a patchwork ensemble of textiles from 21 different regions, representing the nation's diverse craft forms.

“Today’s Doodle celebrates India’s Independence Day and is illustrated by New Delhi-based guest artist Namrata Kumar. On this day in 1947, a new era dawned as India became independent from British rule,” Google stated.

It ranges from the intricate Kutch Embroidery of Gujarat to the captivating Pattu Weave of Himachal Pradesh, from the timeless Banarasi Weave of Uttar Pradesh to the exquisite Leheriya Resist Dyed Textile of Rajasthan.

These textiles form a captivating grid, with the word 'GOOGLE' elegantly embroidered at the centre, embodying the celebratory spirit of Independence Day. Each fabric tells a story, a testament to the collective craftsmanship that forms the heart of India's creative spirit.

The Creative Mind

Kumar shared insights into her creative process, stating, "I sought to cover a broad spectrum of techniques, encompassing embroidery, different weaving styles, printing techniques, resist-dyeing techniques, hand-painted textiles, and more. Additionally, I wanted to ensure that I represented different geographical regions of the country in a balanced manner."

This artistic tribute resonates with the significance of Independence Day, when India emerged from the shackles of British rule in 1947.

The day is marked by a flag-raising ceremony at the iconic Red Fort in Delhi, attended by the Prime Minister and accompanied by the stirring rendition of the national anthem.
