A police investigation involving Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle Sr., has taken another turn after authorities in the Philippines reportedly apologised to his son, Thomas Markle Jr. The 60-year-old had been named a “person of interest” in the inquiry into allegations of child sexual abuse material linked to his father. However, after questioning his fiancée and other people close to him, police reportedly cleared up the matter. The development came on November 6, the same day Thomas Markle Sr. was arrested by the FBI in Florida and charged in connection with the alleged possession of child sexual abuse material.

Why Was Thomas Markle Jr. Named A Person Of Interest?

The controversy began after Philippine Interior Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla said on November 5 that investigators were looking into Thomas Markle Jr.'s possible involvement in the case. According to GMA News, Remulla said witnesses had claimed that underage girls were being brought to Markle Jr.'s home in Cordova, Cebu. He also mentioned ring lights found at the property and said Markle Jr. had explained that he used them to make TikTok videos. At the time, the official made it clear that Markle Jr. was not being treated as a suspect. He was only a person of interest while authorities examined the claims.

The development raised questions because Markle Jr. was the person who had reportedly alerted the police and the FBI after allegedly discovering disturbing material among his father's belongings.

Why Did Philippine Police Apologise?

According to People, citing reports by The Telegraph and The Sun, local police interviewed Markle Jr.'s fiancée, Rose Ann Gabuya, and other people in his social circle. Gabuya reportedly told investigators that her younger siblings and niece regularly visited their home. They also used ring lights to record videos for social media. A source close to the case told The Sun: “The matter has been cleared up,” adding that “officers were very apologetic.”

The Philippine National Police had not immediately responded to People's request for comment on November 7. Therefore, the reported apology has not been independently confirmed through an official police statement.

Thomas Markle Sr. Arrested In Florida

Meanwhile, Thomas Markle Sr., 82, was arrested by federal agents in Florida on November 6. According to People, he was charged with one count of possession of child pornography and appeared in a federal court in Tampa. He was released on his own recognisance and returned to the assisted-living facility where he had been staying. He was also ordered to surrender his passport, with a further court appearance expected in California.

The allegations against him followed claims that material was found among his belongings in the Philippines and in storage units in the US. Markle Sr. has denied possessing child sexual abuse material.

What Has Meghan Markle Said?

Meghan Markle has been estranged from her father since 2018. Reacting to the allegations in October, the Duchess of Sussex said she was “deeply distressed” and that her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. She also explained that keeping her father away from her children was a decision made to protect them. The latest developments have added another layer to an already complex investigation, with authorities now having to address the claims against Thomas Markle Sr. separately from the allegations that briefly involved his son.
