How this Spanish company is turning old wind turbines into a pair of sneakers
The sneakers are the result of a collaboration between renewable-energy company ACCIONA Energía and Spanish fashion brand El Ganso. The latest limited-edition shoes use material recovered from a blade at the Tahivilla wind farm in Cádiz, Spain. The wind farm is being repowered, with 98 older turbines being replaced by 13 newer and more powerful machines. ACCIONA says the upgrade will increase the site's renewable-energy production capacity by 72%.The old blade does not simply become part of the shoe as it is. Sections of the blade are shredded and ground into a fine powder containing fibreglass and epoxy resin. That material is then mixed with rubber and used in the soles of the sneakers. The latest shoes contain 20% fibreglass recovered from the turbine blade, according to ACCIONA. The blade had already spent years making clean energy.

Before becoming part of a fashion product, the blade had spent more than 20 years helping generate renewable electricity at Tahivilla. The wind farm began operating in 2004 and 2005, with a total capacity of 78.4 MW. As part of its upgrade, the old turbines are being removed and replaced with fewer but more powerful machines.
The project is part of ACCIONA's wider Turbine Made initiative, which looks for new uses for materials recovered from retired turbine blades. The company has also explored turning old blade material into solar-panel support beams and surfboards, showing that the material can potentially move into industries far removed from wind energy.

Why are turbine blades difficult to recycle?
The idea is significant because blades are among the hardest parts of a wind turbine to recycle. WindEurope says up to 90% of a wind turbine's mass can already be recycled using established processes. The blades are more difficult because they contain strong composite materials, including fibres bonded with resins.
This is not the only second life for old blades. The sneaker project is part of a much larger effort to find useful roles for retired turbine blades. Across Europe and the US, sections of old blades have been used for pedestrian bridges, playgrounds, public benches, shelters and other infrastructure. A turbine blade that once spent years high above the ground capturing wind is now helping people walk on city streets. The idea may sound unusual, but it highlights a growing shift in the renewable-energy industry.
As older turbines are replaced by newer models, the question is no longer simply what happens when a turbine stops working. Increasingly, companies are asking what its materials can become next, from bridges and playgrounds to the soles of everyday sneakers.
