For more than a century, parts of this Massachusetts landscape were engineered to grow cranberries. Streams were straightened, wetlands covered with sand and water carefully controlled to serve agriculture. Today, the same land looks dramatically different: winding streams flow through marshy ground, native plants are spreading, and wildlife has returned. The transformation of former cranberry farmland in Plymouth into the Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary has become the largest single freshwater restoration project in Massachusetts and a model for what can happen when retired agricultural land is given back to nature.

From cranberry farm to hundreds of acres of wetland

Tidmarsh was once part of a 610-acre commercial cranberry farm assembled by the Schulman family. In 1989, the farm produced about 1% of Ocean Spray's cranberries, according to the Living Observatory. As economic and environmental pressures grew, the family eventually chose conservation over development. Restoring the landscape required much more than simply stopping farming. More than a century of cranberry production had left a thick layer of sand over the original freshwater wetland.

Excavators reshaped the land, old dams were removed, and waterways were re-naturalised. More than 20,000 native plants were introduced, including over 7,000 Atlantic white cedars. Thousands of pieces of woody debris were also placed across streams and former growing areas to help recreate natural habitat.


Scientists discovered the land wasn't 'ecologically dead'

One of the biggest surprises came from beneath the former cranberry beds. Researchers initially feared that decades of intensive farming had left the land severely degraded. Instead, vegetation began appearing within a year of restoration work. “We discovered that former cranberry farms were actually highly restorable,” Beth Lambert, director of the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration, told the Associated Press. Research covering Tidmarsh and other restored cranberry bogs has also found rapid improvements in water retention, soil health and microbial communities within several years.

Why bringing wetlands back matters

Restoring the wetland isn't only about plants and wildlife. Wetlands can act like natural sponges, holding water during heavy rainfall and storms rather than allowing it to rush immediately downstream. At Tidmarsh, sphagnum moss is also returning, which can absorb and store carbon dioxide.

Massachusetts has taken notice. Its Cranberry Bog Restoration Program now helps retiring farmers explore conservation as an alternative to development. The state says restoration can improve water quality, increase biodiversity and help protect low-lying coastal areas from future storm damage. So far, nine state-assisted projects covering roughly 500 acres and 10 miles of stream habitat have been completed, with another 500 acres in planning.

A farm becomes a blueprint for restoration

Tidmarsh's second life shows that heavily modified land doesn't necessarily have to remain that way forever. A landscape once shaped around straight channels and cranberry harvests is again becoming wet, uneven and wild. More importantly, what scientists learn there is now helping Massachusetts restore other retired farms. As former owner Glorianna Davenport told AP, without conservation, abandoned landscapes could be lost to development: “we lose it forever.”
