This ‘Boiling River’ can burn victims alive. Here’s what experts say about its mystery

Deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, a river in Peru has baffled scientists and locals alike with its extreme temperatures—so hot that it has been known to boil living creatures alive. The Shanay-timpishka, often referred to as the 'Boiling River,' is believed to be the only thermal river in the world, stretching approximately 9 kilometers.

Geoscientist Andrés Ruzo, from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, has extensively studied the river and recorded temperatures reaching an astonishing 210°F (100°C). "To put that into everyday terms, the average coffee is roughly 130°F (55°C)," Ruzo explained, as per Mail Online. "You stick your hand in, and you will see second or third-degree burns in a matter of seconds."

A Discovery Rooted in Folklore

Ruzo’s journey to uncovering the truth behind the river began with a childhood tale shared by his grandfather. According to the story, Spanish conquistadors who ventured into the Amazon in search of a legendary city of gold returned with accounts of mysterious wonders—towering trees that blocked out the sun, powerful shamans, warriors with poisoned arrows, and a river that could boil a person alive.


At first, Ruzo dismissed the story as mere folklore. However, a conversation with his aunt changed his perspective when she confirmed the river’s existence, even claiming to have swum in it. As he later discovered, the only time the river is cool enough to enter safely is after heavy rainfall, which lowers its otherwise lethal temperatures.

Skeptical but intrigued, Ruzo traveled 700 kilometers from the nearest volcanic center to investigate. Despite his doubts, he found that the river was very much real and deeply embedded in the daily lives of the local community. The indigenous people utilize its scalding waters for cooking, drinking, and even harnessing its steam.

Scientific Exploration and Conservation Efforts

With permission from the region’s shaman, Ruzo conducted further scientific research. His findings led him to launch The Boiling River Project, an initiative dedicated to preserving this unique natural phenomenon through scientific studies and educational programs.

While the river remains a source of mystery and legend, its scientific significance is undeniable. Experts continue to explore its geothermal origins, as its presence so far from a volcanic source challenges existing geological understanding. For now, the Boiling River remains one of the Amazon's most extraordinary natural wonders, both feared and revered by those who live near it.
