There's something important missing from Facebook's family emoji

Over the past few months, Facebook, quietly, launched a family emoji feature. But not everyone seems to be happy.

There's something important missing from Facebook's family emoji
The social media giant released a slew of diverse, family emoji recently with skin tones that range from light to dark. But it doesn't offer an option for families with mixed backgrounds -- all the members of the emoji families have the same skin tone.

Facebook, as a part of its recent diversity update, pushed a feature containing 125 new family emoji. These provide far more options than the ones previously available on the platform, and more importantly, go beyond the yellow skin tone. It is also the first time that black families have been represented as emoji on Facebook.

The updated family emoji are only available only on desktop for now.

Facebook has faced a lot of backlash over the lack of diversity in its features. It has taken years for the social media giant to move to skin tones beyond the default yellow; non-stereotypical professions for women didn't appear until 2016.

The popularity of emoji has exploded over the years. They have helped create a whole new language and changed the means of communication.
