Even if they did deprive the British King George III of a large part of his colonial empire back in 1776, Americans have adored royalty for a long time.

So, the arrival on May 6, 2019, of the first ‘Anglo-American’ royal baby courtesy Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — a.k.a. the Duke and Duchess of Sussex — is predictably creating more waves on the other side of the Atlantic.

A ‘prince’ preface is uncertain due to the cap on the number of such titles a monarch can bestow on Royal Family progeny at any given time. Yet, there is joyous — if misplaced — speculation that the boy may eventually claim dual nationality and, thus, could just as likely become King of Great Britain as US President. The former promises lifelong tenure and good accommodation but precious little power, of course.

However, as the first avowedly mixed-race direct descendant of a reigning British monarch, it bears noting that little Sussex is the First of His Name, to use a Game of Thrones analogy.

That metaphor would be cemented if he is, indeed, bestowed with a politically significant moniker among the half dozen that are usually allotted to a monarch’s kin, though the bookies will be put out if that happens.
