The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder traded Hollywood for farm life in California. ‘It shifted my life forever.’

Ian Somerhalder, best known for portraying the role of Damon Salvatore in the popular web series The Vampire Diaries, has willingly retired from Hollywood. The 47-year-old, who is married to Twilight actress Nikki Reed, now spends his days on a quiet farm in California, tending to animals and growing his own food. And as per Ian, the decision to move away from the spotlight has not only improved his life but has also improved the life of his two kids.

From Hollywood star to hands-on farmer

For Somerhalder, life on the farm is not simply about escaping the entertainment industry. It has become a way of teaching his children about nature, responsibility and the importance of giving back. News, the actor explained that he grew up understanding that nature works through balance, and that taking from it without replenishing what has been used eventually comes at a cost.

That philosophy now shapes the way his family lives. Rather than relying entirely on outside sources, Somerhalder and his family grow and produce much of what they eat themselves. The transition, however, was far from effortless. The actor admitted that becoming farmers involved plenty of mistakes and failures, with some crops succeeding while others did not.

Somerhalder said farming has gradually introduced his children to a more community-oriented way of living, where neighbours exchange what they have grown and help one another. What began as an attempt to live closer to nature has therefore evolved into a shared lifestyle built around growing, exchanging and making the most of available resources.

The actor's connection with sustainable living was strengthened years ago after a trip to Zimbabwe. During an interview with Fox News Digital, Somerhalder, who was raised in rural Louisiana, recalled seeing how regenerative farming could help damaged land recover and restore entire ecosystems. The experience gave him a deeper understanding of how agriculture can influence not just food production but the health of the environment itself.

Why family and nature come first

His new priorities also explain why returning to Hollywood is not high on his list. Somerhalder has said that while he does not miss the work itself, he does miss the people he met during his years in the industry. Together with Reed, Somerhalder has embraced a slower family life focused on sustainability, animals, homegrown food and spending time outdoors.
