The story behind Bill Gates's birthday hat, that's been in the family for 20 years

Bill Gates, the second richest man in the world, celebrated his 64th birthday last week. And like most birthdays in the Gates household, this too was celebrated in typical, time-honoured tradition: With a top hat and several edible goodies.

Wife Melinda recently posted a photo of the festivities on LinkedIn. She also explained the story of the top hat Gates is seen wearing. “When our daughter Jenn was in pre-school, Bill spotted a funny birthday hat I’d brought home and said he’d wear it in honour of her big day. Jenn then asked Bill to wear it to her classroom, and to my surprise, he said, ‘Yes.’ “Ever since, the birthday hat has come out for every family birthday and has travelled with us for nearly 20 years. Today, it’s Bill’s turn again,” she wrote.
