The much-awaited K-drama will premiere globally on Netflix on September 18, making it available to viewers in India as well. Directed by Jung Ji-woo, The Scandal reimagines a famous literary story in a Joseon setting, with its central characters challenging social rules as they pursue love and desire.

Set in Joseon-era Korea, The Scandal centres on three characters whose lives become intertwined because of a dangerous wager. At the heart of the story is Lady Cho, a woman who refuses to remain confined to the traditional expectations placed on women of her time.

Son Ye-jin plays Lady Cho, who appears calm and composed but has ambitions and desires that go beyond the boundaries of the women's quarters. She is the one who proposes the wager that sets the story in motion.

Ji Chang-wook plays Jo-won, a man known as the greatest playboy in Joseon. Confident and accustomed to getting what he wants, Jo-won accepts Lady Cho's challenge. What begins as a game, however, gradually becomes far more complicated.

NANA plays Hui-yeon, a noblewoman who becomes the unexpected focus of the wager. Although she initially appears reluctant to become involved, the teaser suggests that she is gradually drawn into the dangerous situation created by Lady Cho and Jo-won.

The story is inspired by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel Dangerous Liaisons. However, the K-drama gives the classic tale a Korean historical setting while bringing a more contemporary approach to its themes of attraction, manipulation and forbidden relationships.

K-drama The Scandal teaser out

The first teaser gives viewers a glimpse of the game that could create chaos in Bukchon, the centre of Joseon's high society. Rather than presenting a straightforward love story, the glimpse suggests that the relationships between the three leads will be driven by secrets and competing motivations.

Lady Cho is shown proposing the wager with a determined expression. Jo-won appears ready to take on the challenge, with his confidence and reputation as a womaniser clearly playing into the game.

Hui-yeon, meanwhile, seems caught between hesitation and curiosity. As Jo-won moves closer to her in an attempt to win the wager, Lady Cho watches from the shadows. The preview leaves open the question of whether Jo-won will actually succeed — and what the consequences will be for everyone involved.

The teaser posters further introduce the personalities of the three central characters. Lady Cho is pictured among striking crimson flowers inside her quarters, adding to the mystery surrounding her character. Jo-won is surrounded by beauty, reinforcing his image as Joseon's celebrated playboy. Hui-yeon, meanwhile, stands among blooming plum blossoms while looking into the distance, hinting at the emotional turmoil ahead.

Son Ye-jin and Ji Chang-wook headline the period romance

With Jung Ji-woo at the helm, The Scandal combines the atmosphere of a lavish Korean period drama with the darker themes of Dangerous Liaisons. The story's focus on desire, social restrictions and manipulation is expected to give the romance a more intense edge.

The casting of Son Ye-jin and Ji Chang-wook also adds considerable star power to the project. While Son Ye-jin takes on the role of a woman challenging the restrictions of her time, Ji Chang-wook plays a character whose confidence may be tested when his latest game begins to involve genuine emotions.

NANA completes the central trio as Hui-yeon, whose position in the wager could ultimately change the course of all three lives.

The Scandal is set to premiere globally on Netflix on September 18, including in India. Stay tuned!
