The Real Bro Code: 4-Point Guide To Tell Your Pal To Draw The Line
1/5
Friends In Deed
Learn how to tell your pal to draw the line when he is about to cross it.What makes a true friend? A real bro? Someone who tells you the truth — even when you don’t want to hear it.
With some men, there is often a false sense of bravado when they hang out with other men.
Boys’ night out, guy talk or even just workplace banter among men, could sometimes escalate into distasteful jokes, inappropriate stories being shared and less than fun (for everyone else) conduct.
But a real friend will stop you and tell you when it’s time to call it quits and more importantly, call you out on your behaviour.
If you find yourself in this position, here’s how to tell your buddy to tone it down and go home.

Call Him Out
Three strikes and you need to call him out and that’s still two too many if he’s in the workplace.
If your friend or colleague has said something inappropriate and distasteful, don’t try to fill up the awkwardness with nervous laughter.
Tell your friend that you don’t think the story or joke is funny.
If you don’t encourage him with a fake reaction, he’s going to realise that what he said was not well received and hopefully, will tone down his anecdotes the next time around.

Educate Him
At times, distasteful things are said out of ignorance, as misplaced humour or even due to a cultural disconnect.
But as a friend, it is up to you to educate those around you. So, when a pal makes an off-colour remark, don’t just walk away and have him wondering what he did wrong. Tell him why it was wrong.
Educating someone on what is acceptable and what is not, is a sign that you’re looking out for your friend and want him to grow as a better human being.
Now, that’s a pal.

Offer An Alternative
After calling your pal out and telling him why what he said wasn’t correct, your next step is to offer him an alternative.
Whether he thought a crude remark could pass off as humour or an inquisitive question as curiosity, it’s best to tell him that if no one is engaging with him, it’s because of the content and delivery of his speed.
Give him some guidelines on what can be said in jest and what is off limits.
Even when it comes to members of the opposite sex, let him know what behaviour is allowed and what isn’t, especially at the workplace.

Try And Try
But if you don’t succeed in curbing your pal’s inappropriate behaviour, it’s time to ditch him.
Don’t tolerate it because even when you’re out partying with him, his bad attitude will reflect on you.
And in the workplace, it can get even dicier. If you’ve made it clear that you don’t like certain behaviour because it is wrong, and he makes no attempt to improve himself, you have full permission to remove him from your list of bros.
