Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is one of the biggest films of the year, and with its theatrical release just around the corner, fans are getting an early look at how the ambitious project came together. Before the film reaches cinemas on July 17, viewers can watch a special documentary that explores both the making of the movie and the legacy of Homer's timeless epic.

Titled The Odyssey: The Making of an Epic, the documentary will stream on JioHotstar and gives audiences a behind-the-scenes look at Nolan's latest directorial venture while also revisiting the story that inspired it.

The Odyssey: The Making of an Epic will premiere on JioHotstar on July 14, 2026, three days before The Odyssey arrives in theatres worldwide on July 17.


The documentary is designed as a companion piece for the film, taking viewers through the origins of Homer's 8th-century B.C. poem, its lasting influence on literature and storytelling, and the effort involved in adapting it for today's audiences.

What is the documentary about?

Running for around 30 minutes, The Odyssey: The Making of an Epic goes behind the camera to show how Christopher Nolan and his team brought one of history's most celebrated stories to the big screen.

The featurette highlights the production's large-scale filmmaking, extensive location shoots and technical approach. Instead of relying heavily on studio sets, the team filmed across parts of Greece and Morocco to recreate the ancient world as realistically as possible.

It also showcases Nolan's decision to shoot the entire film using 70 mm IMAX cameras, a format he has long championed. The documentary covers everything from large battle scenes to emotional character moments while explaining the practical challenges faced during filming.

One of those challenges included a demanding 45-minute trek in sandals to Greece's Nestor's Cave, showing the cast and crew's commitment to filming in authentic locations.

Star-studded cast takes centre stage

The documentary also gives viewers a closer look at the film's ensemble cast.

Matt Damon plays King Odysseus, while Tom Holland stars as Telemachus. Anne Hathaway appears as Queen Penelope, and Robert Pattinson plays the suitor Antinous. The cast also includes Zendaya in a key role.

Based on Homer's epic, The Odyssey follows King Odysseus' difficult ten-year journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces mythical creatures, divine intervention and countless dangers, while Penelope and Telemachus struggle to protect Ithaca from men trying to seize the throne.

Ahead of the release, Christopher Nolan attended the film's Mumbai premiere along with members of the cast. Speaking at the event, he said: "This is not the first time I've come to Mumbai, but it's the first time I've had a chance to launch a film here. You are among the first audiences in the world to see the film. It's a thrill to be in India. I had the pleasure of filming here twice, once in Jodhpur, once in Mumbai. Every time we come here, it's very special."
