Academy Awards 2023 nomination list has a new addition - ‘The Kashmir Files’.

Vivek Agnihotri, the director, took to Twitter to share the good news with his followers. "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: #TheKashmirFiles has been shortlisted for #Oscars2023 in the first list of @TheAcademy. It’s one of the 5 films from India. I wish all of them the very best. A great year for Indian cinema," he tweeted. The director also revealed that the ‘TKF’ cast has also bagged Oscar nominations in the ‘Best Actor’ category, and tagged actors Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar, and Anupam Kher.
In a separate tweet, Kher shared the news of his nomination. “Happy to be nominated in the #BestActor category for @IIFA awards for #TheKashmirFiles! @vivekagnihotri.”
In a fiery interview with Times Now, Agnihotri admitted that the news of the nomination was “a big validation” and also said that news of this milestone will be a “slap” to naysayers. He also claimed that he has been a victim of a “vicious campaign” and there had been threats against him and his family.

‘TKF’ has been the bone of contention between political factions. Often regarded as polarising, it has often come under fire for allegedly having a biased portrayal of historical events and fanning communal tensions in the country.

Aside from ‘TKF’, the other movies which have been shortlisted for Oscar nominations are ‘RRR’, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ‘Kantara’, ‘Vikrant Rona’, and many others. These are among the 301 films that have been deemed eligible for nominations by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. These movies are not nominated for Oscars ‘23 yet but have been featured as candidates eligible for a nom.

About ‘TKF’
The movie revolves around the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley of Kashmir. Made on a shoestring budget, ‘TKF’ was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2022, and minted more than Rs 340 crore worldwide.
