In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, director Michael Chaves shared that the decision to end the franchise came from a collective understanding among the team that now is the right time. “You want to stop at the peak,” he said, adding that there was a mutual feeling among producers and creators that The Conjuring series should bow out while it’s still at its creative and commercial high. According SFX reports, Chaves didn’t want to be the one to drag the franchise down with unnecessary sequels, and saw this as a rare chance to make a meaningful and timely conclusion.Chaves, who previously directed The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, also said that he was determined to bring back the feel of the original 2013 film. He aims for Last Rites to return to that “back-to-basics haunted house” atmosphere that made the first movie such a standout in the genre. The director also shared that there’s extra pressure this time around, to deliver a perfect farewell to beloved characters Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed once again by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.
