The farmhouse that inspired The Conjuring became one of horror cinema’s most recognisable locations, but the real story of the Perron family continued long after the film’s release. More than a decade after the 2013 movie introduced audiences to their alleged paranormal experiences, the family has faced personal losses, while their former home remains at the centre of public fascination. Here is what happened to the family and the historic Rhode Island property.

The Real Story Behind The Conjuring

Roger and Carolyn Perron moved into an old farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island, in 1971 with their five daughters: Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy and April. The family said they experienced unexplained noises, strange smells and apparitions during their time there. Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren visited the property in 1973. Their involvement later became a central part of the film, which starred Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the investigators.

However, the movie took considerable creative liberties. Andrea Perron, the eldest daughter, told Global News in 2021 that the film was “about 95% fiction and about 5% hard truth”. The family remained in the farmhouse until 1980, despite the experiences they described. Their accounts of the haunting have never established that supernatural activity actually occurred.

What Happened To The Perron Family?

After leaving Rhode Island, Roger, Carolyn and their younger daughters moved to Georgia. Andrea was away at college, while Nancy remained in the farmhouse for another year before moving to a nearby community. Roger and Carolyn eventually divorced. Their youngest daughter, April, died in March 2017 at the age of 51 from an accidental prescription overdose following surgery, according to The Providence Journal.

Roger, a US Navy veteran, died in Orlando, Florida, in May 2026 at the age of 90, People reported. His obituary also noted that he and his longtime partner, Carlene Harris, supported homeless veterans and people facing difficult circumstances. Andrea has remained the most publicly visible member of the family, appearing in paranormal television programmes and documentaries. She also wrote House of Darkness: House of Light, a series of books detailing the family’s experiences.

Why Andrea Perron Questioned The Film’s Villain

One of the film’s central figures is Bathsheba Sherman, portrayed as a malevolent presence haunting the family. But Andrea has questioned that portrayal. In an interview with Global News, she argued that Bathsheba had been unfairly blamed for the alleged events. “Essentially, Bathsheba copped the blame for everything evil, and it simply wasn’t the case,” she said. Historical accounts have also cast doubt on popular stories portraying Sherman as a witch or murderer. The allegations surrounding her have not been supported by convincing historical evidence.

What Is Happening To The Real Conjuring House?

The farmhouse, built in 1736 at 1677 Round Top Road, became a tourist attraction following the movie’s success. It was sold for $1.5 million in 2022. The property later faced financial uncertainty. In October 2025, The Boston Globe reported that a planned auction had been cancelled after the mortgage loan was sold, leaving the house’s future unclear. According to the property’s official website, the house remains privately owned and is undergoing restoration. It is not affiliated with or sponsored by the film studio. The Perrons’ story continues to attract horror fans worldwide. Yet beyond the frightening scenes recreated on screen, their experience remains a family’s personal account—one that Hollywood transformed into a global horror franchise.
