Till recently, the BCCI website mentioned MS Dhoni as the captain of the Indian cricket team.

This is snafu season for the Indian cricket board. There is the criticism over the importance given to Anushka Sharma at a team function in England. And till a few weeks ago, the BCCI website identified MS Dhoni as the captain, even though Virat Kohli is the team chief in all formats.

Dhoni stepped down in 2014 as Test captain and in 2017 as ODI and T20 captain. In his decade as skipper from 2007 to 2017, Dhoni was in charge of two World Cup winning teams — the World T20 in 2007 and the 2011 World Cup. He also became India’s most successful Test captain by surpassing Sourav Ganguly in 2013, a year before he retired from the longer format of the game.

Though Dhoni still plays limited overs matches as wicket-keeper batsman, the Board website’s gaffe was unexpected. A BCCI official blamed a technical glitch for the error. It has been rectified and the website now correctly mentions Kohli as the captain.

Kohli came close to carrying India to victory in the first Test against England in Birmingham. But he was a flop at Lord’s. An Indian win in the subsequent matches would help fans be more forgiving about everything, including Mrs Kohli’s prominence at a team banquet and the BCCI’s occasional bungling on their website.
